When you perform gestures, you actually interact with what's on your screen.

More control at your fingertips Magic Trackpad gives you a whole new way to control what's on your Mac desktop computer.Try putting your iPad to sleep and/or wake it up to see this. And, if you click on that little icon, it will show whether Universal Control really is available (and allow you to toggle it on or off, if it is available). Go to System Preferences -> Dock & Menu Bar -> Display, and check “Show in Menu Bar always”.You’ll get a small icon in the Menu Bar of your Mac which will show you whether Universal Control is actually working at the moment. I don’t know if any of this applies to your problem, but whether does or doesn’t, on your Mac I’d recommend doing something to keep track of when UC is active or not, which I’ve found useful while trying to troubleshoot Universal Control. But if the Mac goes to sleep, though, it seems that Universal Control mostly stops working (and simply trying to move the cursor may not wake the Mac … although a left click on the trackpad apparently will). If the Mac screen saver comes on, Universal Control still seems to work as long as the cursor is over on the iPad. And if I’d kept the cursor over on the iPad, when it goes to sleep, the cursor (but maybe not the focus?) instantly comes back over the the Mac. I have noticed that while Universal Control is active, it does seem to try to keep the iPad from going to sleep.

Or download “iPad User Guide” from the Apple Bookstore into the Books appįor me, at least, it took more than a little practice to be able to switch between how the trackpad works between a MacBook and an iPad … and how easy it was for whichever of the two systems I wasn’t using for a while to go to sleep. Online at iPad User Guide - Apple Support They’re all detailed in the iPad User Guide, search for “Trackpad gestures for iPad” in the user guide either Unchecked: Silent clicking Ĭhecked: Force Click and haptic feedback īy comparison, you don’t have any choice about what trackpad gestures work on the iPad. Personally I have essentially everything checked with these two exceptions: What you have checked there will work what’s unchecked will not work on the Mac, at least. Click with the cursor on top of Safari on the iPad to put the focus there, and then you’ll be able to scroll there.Īnother thing to keep in mind is that trackpad gestures are whatever you set them to be on the Mac in System Preferences -> trackpad. You should see scrolling happening back in the Safari window on the Mac - because the focus is still there. Then (without clicking anywhere else) move the cursor over to the iPad, on top of Safari there. That Safari window on your Mac should now scroll - because that’s where you’ve placed the focus! Next, with the cursor still over the Safari window, click, then try scrolling. Again try to do a scroll up or down with two fingers (without clicking). Now move the cursor over onto the Safari window on the Mac (but don’t click). Nothing happens, because the home screen itself doesn’t scroll. Try to do a scroll up or down using two fingers. Then move the cursor on the Mac to a different part of the screen (outside of any window). For example, start up Safari on both systems. Normally, you do that with a simple click. Nor do various gestures work the same depending upon where you set the “focus”. But be aware that not all gestures are supposed to work exactly the same on both systems. If both systems are on and NOT sleeping, moving the cursor around (including back and forth between the two systems), and simple clicks work exactly as expected. And with Universal Control turned on, the keyboard & trackpad work across both the MacBook and iPad.

I use a somewhat-similar arrangement: a (2018) MacBook Pro (MacOS 12.4) and a gen 7 iPad (iPadOS 15.5) with a Magic Keyboard and a separate Magic Trackpad - both “connected” to the MacBook Pro via Bluetooth.
